PAWS…and Think Club

PAWS…and Think! is a club at Elizabethtown Area High School made up of students interested in promoting healthy decision-making among their peers. The club meets on a weekly basis during homeroom and FLEX period to plan activities for students year round. Students design posters, t-shirts, produce videos, participate in community events and engage students in the high school and middle school in activities that get the word out that most students at Elizabethtown High School are making healthy decisions regarding their lives. In fact, most EAHS students choose not to drink alcohol or use marijuana in a typical month. How do we know that? The information comes from the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS), which students in Elizabethtown take in 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grade.

While most students at Elizabethtown High School are reporting they are not drinking or using marijuana, they’re also reporting they think most of their peers are. Based on the PAYS results here at Elizabethtown, that’s a misperception. Research has shown that what teenagers believe about what most of their friends and peers are doing influences the decisions they make. Our goal: to change that misperception and let people know that most students here at Elizabethtown High School are making healthy life choices.
