Red Ribbon Week / Make the Community Connection

DID YOU KNOW? Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs and alcohol are 42% less likely to use either than those who don’t; yet, only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.

Red Ribbon Week (October 23-31), the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation, is your opportunity to get the ongoing conversation started.

This year’s theme is “Life is Your Journey. Travel Drug Free”. In partnership with EACTC, all student’s in the Elizabethtown Area School District will be participating in and celebrating Red Ribbon Week starting Monday, October 22nd.  The High School’s PAWS…and Think group is busy preparing the materials and bulbs that will be distributed to Elementary students.  During Red Ribbon Week, teacher’s will share age appropriate lessons with students about refusal skills, decision-making, and the importance of being drug free.  In addition to the classroom activities, students in grades K through 6 will bring home a red tulip bulb which symbolically represents their promise to stay drug free.

Some students will also plant bulbs on the school grounds, which will be a reminder in spring of the promise they made this fall.  We encourage you to talk to the youth in your life and ask them what they’ve learned about making healthy life choices as they participate in Red Ribbon Week Activities. Lancaster County Joining Forces, EACTC and Compass Mark are hosting a free lecture on ‘How to Talk to Children About Drugs’ on Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:30 pm.  The location of the lecture is Alliance Church at 425 Cloverleaf Road in Elizabethtown.  Register Here

HOW CAN YOU MAKE THE COMMUNITY CONNECTION?  EACTC is expanding Red Ribbon Week into the community by offering residents the opportunity to ‘Plant the Promise’ at your home or place of business.  We hope to spread the message of support across the community to show our students we stand by their decision to stay drug free. We are selling tulips by the dozen; the price for the first dozen includes the cost of a “Plant the Promise” sign which you can proudly place in your yard next spring.
